How we work, every day
- 1
Observe
changes in the participant or their environment.
- 2
Understand
the participant's preferences, routines and support requirements.
- 3
Support
the participant according to their individual plan and agreed supports.
- 4
Communicate
relevant changes to family, carers, coordinators or professionals.
- 5
Escalate
urgent or concerning issues to the right health or emergency service.
Autism and communication
Some autistic people experience differences in communication, sensory processing, social interaction and attention, and may feel anxious when routines change unexpectedly. Every person is different, so we learn how each individual communicates rather than assuming.
- Speaking calmly and clearly, and giving time to respond
- Explaining what will happen before doing it
- Respecting personal space and reducing noise or sensory load
- Using the communication methods that work for that person
- Keeping routines predictable where possible
Supporting people with limited mobility
People who spend long periods in bed or have very limited mobility can be at higher risk of pressure injuries, urinary problems and breathing difficulties. Our role is prevention, observation and early escalation: we follow the care plan set by health professionals, notice changes, and report them promptly. Support workers do not diagnose or treat medical conditions.
